Art and music mingle in the Portland Symphony Orchestra's newest fund-raising event, "Variations on a Violin," in which leading Maine artists design works of art using a violin as their canvas. The group of violins will tour throughout southern Maine from March 4 through June 25. The opening event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. March 4 at Jameson Gallery on Commercial Street in Portland. Beginning that evening, people will be able to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win one of the works of art. The 12 artists are Thomas Connolly, Thomas Crotty, William Fothergill, Suzanne Harden, Connie Hayes, Anne Kilham, Nathaniel Larrabee, Thomas Paquette, Scott Potter, Gail Spaien, Persis Clayton Weirs and Rebecca Shelly, a student at Maine College of Art. All proceeds benefit the Portland Symphony Orchestra, including its education and community outreach programs. Raffle tickets will be pre-sold beginning Feb. 23 on the Portland Symphony Orchestra's Web site, www.portlandsymphony.com. Tickets cost one for $10, three for $25, 10 for $75, and 20 for $100.
